Welcome
All over the world, communities save and borrow in credit unions: 186,000,000 members enjoy the benefits of 54,000 credit unions in 97 countries.By encouraging regular saving, lending to members from pooled savings and sharing profits amongst the members, credit unions circulate wealth around the communities they serve to the advantage of all. They work like a money pump – giving more spending power to savers and borrowers and making everybody better off.
Credit unions are well established in Scotland, but access is not yet universal. Thousands of people are denied the opportunity to benefit from regular saving, affordable and responsible credit and a say in the running of their own financial co-operative.
At a time when redundancy is commonplace, credit is restricted and fuel is increasingly expensive, a vision for a more prosperous Perth and Kinross has made its first step towards becoming a reality.
Perth and Kinross Credit Union Project is currently researching whether credit union services for residents and employees in Perth and Kinross would be beneficial, and if so, how best to meet this demand. This project is supported by Perth and Kinross Council and executed by Perth Citizens Advice Bureau.
People throughout Perth and Kinross are showing their support for having a local, community owned money service in the region by signing and returning pledge forms. We need 700 people to confirm they would be interested in saving with a credit union if there was one here to show that there is enough interest to make it work. The pledge forms can be printed from the Make it Happen page or ordered by calling Mairi on 01738 450599. Pledges are non-binding, so you can change your mind if you feel a credit union does not suit your circumstances when the service opens - you are simply showing an interest in being a part of a credit union at this stage."
